Libya to Receive COVID-19 Patients in Hospitals

A medical advisory committee to combat the coronavirus in eastern Libya’s Benghazi city has requested medical authorities of the interim government to open the wards of hospitals for new cases.

The committee pointed out that quarantine centers have reached full capacity and can no longer accommodate more COVID-19 patients.

In a statement on Wednesday, the committee of the eastern-based government recommended that new wards are set up for newly infected patients.

It called for the full adherence with an infection control policy for all medical personnel.

Meanwhile, the Libyan National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported on Wednesday 561 new coronavirus cases, 231 of them having contracted the disease after coming into contact with infected people.

The new cases raised the infection tally to 24,936, with the deal toll reaching 394.

The capital, Tripoli, has the most cases (410), followed by Benghazi with 33 infections and Bani Walid, in northwestern Libya, while the remaining infections were reported in several other cities and towns.

Among the new patients are committee member Dr. Ahmed al-Haddad along with two medical personnel in Ghadames General Hospital in southwestern Libya.
