Libya Talks Set December 2021 Date for Elections

Libyan participants in political talks taking place in Tunis have set December 24, 2021 as the date for parliamentary and presidential elections, the acting UN Libya envoy Stephanie Williams said on Friday.

The United Nations has stepped up efforts to resolve the conflict in Libya, which has been mired in chaos since the 2011 overthrow of ruler Moammar al-Gaddafi.

The Government of National Accord (GNA) and Libyan National Army (LNA) agreed to a ceasefire last month in Geneva.

Rival forces this week kicked off UN-brokered Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Tunisia. They have so produced a preliminary roadmap for "organizing free, fair, inclusive and credible presidential and parliamentary elections” that also includes steps to unite institutions, Williams said on Wednesday.

They discussed a proposed unified transitional government on Thursday.

The talks, between 75 delegates selected by the UN to represent existing institutions and the diversity of Libyan society, take place in parallel with talks between former rival military delegations in the Libyan city of Sirte to fill in the details of the October ceasefire deal.
