Libya shipwreck: More than 100 migrants feared dead after boat sinks

Fears are growing over more than 100 migrants who may have been killed in a Libya shipwreck.

The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, in Libya, reported "over 100 persons" may have died.

They said on Twitter: "Tragic news of deadly shipwreck off the coasts of Al Khoms.

"Initial reports indicate that over 100 persons may have lost their lives while other 140 have been rescued and disembarked and receiving medical and humanitarian assistance by UNHCR partner IMC."

Libyan migrants have previously tried to reach Europe on unseaworthy boats.

In 2018, over 2,000 people died attempting to make that journey to Europe across the Mediterranean sea.

The UNHCR and other agencies have called for survivors of today's shipwreck not to be returned to Libya.

They say migrants are routinely jailed and kept in inhumane conditions in the conflict zone .

Earlier this month, at least 80 migrants were killed in an air strike on a jail outside of Tripoli.
