The Interior Ministry in the Government of National Accord (GNA) announced Saturday that it had seized an Iranian ship that was blacklisted by the United States.
The Tripoli-based government said that the ship was investigated by Misrata port authorities, which identified it as Shahr E. Kord.
The cargo ship, which was carrying 144 containers, was anchored off the port and was found to be under US and European sanctions.
The general prosecutor has been informed of the development, said the Ministry.
The vessel was blacklisted back in November 2018, according to the US Treasury.
The Shahr E. Kord had departed from Bulgaria’s Burgas port and headed to Misrata on April 20.
Libyan National Army spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari had previously warned that the Iranian ship was headed towards Misrata, which opposes the military.
He charged that the vessel was illegally transporting weapons and ammunition to Misrata.
