Libya’s parliament has voted to reject the agreements signed between the country’s Government of National Accord (GNA) and Turkey on maritime rights in the Mediterranean and military cooperation.
The parliament also approved to sever ties with Turkey, in a meeting on Saturday.
The Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) also voted unanimously to refer GNA Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, foreign minister and interior minister to be prosecuted for "high treason".
The HoR also voted anonymously to abolish the political agreement signed in Skhirat at the end of 2015 – it described this as ‘non-constitutional’ and demanded that the international organizations, authorities, and community back off from the international recognition of Sarraj’s government.
The HoR dedicated Saturday’s session to discuss the consequences of the Turkish intervention in Libyan issues, and the Turkish parliament's approval to dispatch forces to Libya.
Moreover, the US embassy in Libya said that it had convened a meeting of US government experts and representatives of Sarraj's government to determine concrete steps to eliminate militias, one of the fundamental issues underlying the conflict in Libya.
The embassy said in a statement that the US appreciates the government's readiness to address this issue and will remain closely engaged with all Libyan partners as they implement measures to dislodge these violent groups.
"These talks come at a time when toxic foreign intervention threatens to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya and escalate the situation into a wider regional conflict,” the statement read.
It added that the US remains convinced that long-term stability can only be achieved through an end to the conflict, return to political negotiation and the establishment of a unified government capable of providing security and prosperity to the Libyan people as well as preventing terrorists from finding refuge in Libya.
