Libyan Minister of Health at the Government of National Unity Ali Zanati announced on Wednesday an initiative to reopen the coastal road that links the country’s western and eastern cities.
The initiative, dubbed “Power of Hope,” aims to reopen the coastal road to transport patients, medications and humanitarian needs and alleviate the suffering of the citizens, he told a press conference.
After 75 days of work, the ministry is seeking to improve the health sector in Libya, he explained.
The road, which links Misrata and Sirte cities, has been closed since the war erupted between the former UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and the east-based Libyan National Army (LNA) in 2019.
Despite ending the war and reaching a ceasefire agreement between rivals in August 2020, the coastal road has remained closed.
“There are technical arrangements for implementing the initiative and opening a humanitarian pathway in coordination with relevant authorities,” the minister noted.
The initiative could only be implemented if various Libyan parties agree, especially the 5+5 Joint Military Committee, which is considered responsible for this road.
