The National Center for Disease Control has intensified coronavirus vaccination campaigns in cities in western Libya as the country recorded a daily high of more than 2,000 cases.

Health Minister Ali Zanati has launched two coronavirus vaccination campaigns in Zawiya and Misrata to those above 18.

Zanati urged citizens to take the vaccine the soonest.

He added that the Ministry will support the health centers that have launched vaccination campaigns in regions with the highest rates of coronavirus infections.

Libya is to receive 500,000 doses of the one-shot only Sputnik Light by the end of the week, the government’s official spokesperson, Mohamed Hamuda, said.

He confirmed that around 450,000 people have been vaccinated so far.

Libya's National Center for Disease Control announced 2,866 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday.

This brings the total number of cases in Libya to more than 217,000, with a death tally of 3,253 since the outbreak began in the country in March 2020.

Tripoli registered the highest cases of coronavirus (840), followed by Misrata (763). The remaining cases were recorded in 32 regions and municipalities.

The Health Minister stated earlier that Libya is still in the safe zone.

In the meantime, the World Health Organization (WHO) stressed the importance of abiding by precautionary measures. It is particularly concerned by the Alpha and Beta variants in Libya.
