Library to close for 'fire protection works' - just two years after huge multi-million pound development first opened

A library in Tameside will be closing its doors after the council was told it needed extra fire protection - just two years after the modern development first opened.

The Ashton-under-Lyne library was built in March 2019 as part of the multi-million pound Vision Tameside project.

But it will be shut for 12 weeks from tomorrow (November 6), as building works to 'boost' its fire protection take place.

Insurers suggested the works would 'reduce risk and insurance premiums' for the building at Tameside One.

It comes following changes in the fire insurance market in light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Additional fire detection equipment will be added in voids between floors at the site.

The prior absence of the fire detection equipment is not currently against British fire safety standards.

The library space is housed in Tameside One, the vast £48m building built in the town centre to replace the former council headquarters.

During the three-month closure, opening hours at Droylsden, Dukinfield and Stalybridge Libraries will be extended.

Tameside Council Executive Member responsible for libraries Cllr Leanne Feeley acknowledged this would be an 'inconvenience' for some customers.

She said: “We’re looking forward to getting the works out of the way and Ashton Library back open and welcoming customers as soon as possible.

"In the meantime, we appreciate customers may be inconvenienced so we’re putting measures in place to make it as easier for people to use our other local libraries – as well as our full range of online resources – as an alternative.

"Additionally, loans periods are being extended for the duration of the closure and no one needs to worry about accruing a fine on any items borrowed from Ashton Library while it is closed.”

Thousands visited the library in its first successful week of opening in 2019.

From November 22, a limited service will be available from Level 1 in Tameside One.
