Library read-in protests in Glasgow continue as more than 3,000 people sign petition

Dozens of people in Glasgow have taken part in a socially distanced 'read-in' protest against the closure of city libraries.

For the second weekend in a row, people have showed up to read outside their local library, and the petition to save Whiteinch Library has so far gained over 3,500 signatures.

In mid-April 2021, charity Glasgow Life announced the closure of Whiteinch Library after local residents noticed that it was not scheduled for reopening after lockdown.

We previously reported how Glasgow Life plans to move the Whiteinch Library facilities to Scotstoun Stadium - a decision which has also been criticised by campaigners.

Save Whiteinch Library campaign group say there was no formal announcement or active community consultation, and that "the fact of the matter had to be winkled out by concerned citizens".

Robert Mellish, the Campaign Manager for Save Whiteinch Library told Glasgow Live: "We are a locally based campaign that intends to ensure that Glasgow City Council reopens Whiteinch Library.

"Whiteinch Library, in western Glasgow, is surrounded by a mixed community. The Whiteinch community at its heart has suffered many depredations from the planners and the council over the years.

"These include the demolition of most of its shopping area to make way for the Clyde Tunnel, the destruction of 20% of its park for the Clyde Expressway, the demolition of its swimming pool for property development, the police station, the railway stations, the cinemas and now this, which is the final straw.

"The community cannot accept the removal of one of its few remaining assets.

"Whiteinch Library is a precious resource for the local community. It is used by local schools, nurseries and provides access to computers and internet and assistance to those who don't have these resources at home, as well as being a quiet place to study for many.

"Please join us as well to fight for this much needed community asset."

The group have been shown support by MP, Carol Monaghan, local councillors Maggie McTernan and Ade Aibinu, Whiteinch Community Council, Scotstoun Community Council, Jordanhill Community Council, Yoker Community Council and all list Holyrood candidates for Glasgow Anniesland from all political parties.

Following the launch of petitions to save both Whiteinch and Maryhill libraries, Glasgow Life has said they are "determined to ensure that no building will be left to decline" and are exploring "viable and positive uses for the city’s heritage buildings".
