Libraries in Dumbarton and Alexandria reopen with click and collect service

Alexandria and Dumbarton libraries partially reopened today for a click and collect book borrowing service.

The facilities were closed in March when the lockdown was introduced, however First Minister Nicola Sturgeon gave them the green light to reopen earlier this month as restrictions were loosened.

And now West Dunbartonshire Council have revealed how residents can start to loan books once again.

The new arrangement will see residents request up to five items online or by phone, with a pick-up time then arranged to allow bookworms to safely collect their order.

Branches will remain closed other than for collections, which can happen between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Books will not currently be transferred between libraries and will be quarantined for 72 hours when they are returned.

During the first phase of reopening CDs and DVDs will not be available for hire.

Councillor Ian Dickson, convener of corporate services, said: “We know how popular our library service is and we appreciate not all residents have been able to access our extensive online collection.

“We are keen to partially restart this service as we recognise the vital role our libraries play in the lives of our residents, especially those who are housebound or are shielding.

“Residents can order their selections and collect from a library in each of the main towns in West Dunbartonshire.”

Whilst vice-convener, Councillor Iain McLaren, added: “I’m sure this partial reopening will be welcomed by our residents who will have missed having books to read during the required closure of our branches. We are keen to bring this service back and this is the safest way.”
