Libor Sionko backs Slavia Prague over Rangers as former Ibrox man reveals he still carries the scars from Scottish spell

Former Rangers midfielder Libor Sionko admits he'll be cheering on Slavia Prague against his old club in the Europa League.

He represented arch-rivals Sparta Prague twice during his playing career, as well as having a brief spell at Ibrox.

But the 44-year-old, the only Czech to play for Rangers, is putting country first as he reflected on his difficult time in Scotland.

Sionko said: "I want Slavia to go through but I see it as a 50-50 tie.

"Rangers certainly won't underestimate them because Slavia eliminated Leicester in the last round, which resonated in England and Scotland. But I still think Slavia have a chance.

"I'm curious to see how both matches go."

Sionko spent just one season at Rangers after being signed by flop manager Paul Le Guen.

And the former Czech international admits he just wasn't suited to Scottish football.

Sionko explained: "Rangers wanted to change their style of play, play a more European way, so they bought maybe 10 new players.

"But we didn't start well, Celtic stretched their lead and Le Guen left in the middle of the season. That was the beginning of the end for me too.

"I didn't play many matches and I went to Copenhagen in the summer. Even now I'm sorry it didn't go as planned.

"Paul Le Guen wanted me to play the way I used to. But I quickly realised that this would not be football for me. With my physical constitution, I struggled.

"The Scottish league was really tough, I've still got the scar from one of the operations I had to have.

"At home it was still possible to play but sometimes away from home it was truly brutal. Later though I took it as a valuable experience which strengthened me.

"I can't say it was the most successful season but I look back on it fondly. I was still signed by a famous club, there was a great atmosphere in the stadiums and I improved my English."
