Liberals keen to revive abandoned plan for Wallsend-Mayfield road

REVIVAL PLAN: A map of the abandoned Wallsend to Mayfield road.

AN abandoned plan for an arterial road between Wallsend and Mayfield should be revived, two Liberal candidates believe.

Ward 4 candidate Callum Pull and Ward 1 candidate Blake Keating have pledged support for the arterial road, much of which was formerly dedicated as road reserves.

The route was ditched when the state decided to build the Inner City Bypass, but some land along the route remains vacant.

"The land corridors are sitting there, ready for this road. We can't sit idly by for another few decades while our streets become even more congested," Mr Keating said.

Mr Pull said the project would take pressure off suburban streets which are being used as main roads throughout the western suburbs.

"What we want is for commuters to get a clear run - instead of turning and winding through countless different streets to get from one side of the city to the other," he said.

The duo said the original plan could be reworked.

"The fundamentals of this project are solid," Mr Pull said.

The council election is on December 4. Pre-poll voting opens on Monday.
