Lib Dems still deciding whether to stand candidate in Broxtowe

A decision is still yet to be made on whether the Liberal Democrats will stand a candidate against incumbent Anna Soubry in Broxtowe.

It is understood to be likely that the pro-remain party will not run against the current MP, however a decision is yet to be taken at national level.

The fear is that standing too many pro-remain candidates in the seat could damage the chances of returning a remain-backing MP.

Nationally, it is understood that efforts are ongoing to forge a ‘remain alliance’, whereby some Green, Plaid Cymru and Lib Dem candidates in around 60 seats step aside to give others a better chance of defeating pro-Brexit candidates.

However a pro-remain Green Party candidate, Kat Boettge, has announced she will be contesting Broxtowe.

In September, the Broxtowe Lib Dems selected local councillor Tim Hallam as their candidate.

Anna Soubry was elected as a Conservative in 2017 with a margin of 863.

Since then, she left her seat and founded a new political party, now called the Independent Group for Change.

A spokesman for the Lib Dems said: “We don’t speculate about potential deals on a seat-by-seat basis.”

All parties have until Thursday, December 14 to name their candidates.
