Lib Dem leader Davey brands Trump an ‘authoritarian creep’

  • Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, called for a new written constitution, dubbed a “new Magna Carta”, during his party's spring conference on Sunday.
  • Davey said the proposed constitution would need to safeguard fundamental commitments such as human rights, the NHS and freedom of expression, making Britain resistant to “authoritarian creeps like Donald Trump”.
  • Davey emphasised that this new legal framework would enshrine values including the rule of law, universal human rights, a free press and universal healthcare.
  • He also advocated for Britain to decouple its nuclear deterrent from its reliance on American maintenance, arguing that Trump's actions demonstrate the US is no longer a consistently dependable ally.
  • The Liberal Democrat leader criticised Reform UK and Nigel Farage in the context of his constitutional proposals, and implicitly critiqued Labour's suggestions regarding jury trials.
