Liar series 2 episode one leaves viewers confused as they struggle to remember what happened

Many frustrated Liar viewers claim they've been left confused by the first episode of the new series of Liar.

After an absence of over two years, the smash hit ITV drama made its highly anticipated return to the screen for its second series on Monday night.

The Liar series 2 cast sees Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd reprise their roles as Laura Nielson and the man who raped her, Andrew Earlham.

The new series also sees a return to ITV for former Coronation Street favourite and Cheat actress Katherine Kelly as DCI Karen Renton, the sharp shooting, straight talking detective tasked with finding out who killed Earlham, just as a man hunt was launched for his arrest.

And, while many viewers were thrilled to see Katherine in action again, on Twitter there was an overwhelming sense of confusion as episode's one many flashbacks, including one of Laura and Andrew's first meeting, left viewers disorientated and others soon realised that the fact Liar hadn't been on since the end of 2017, meant they'd forgotten what had happened in series 1 and struggled to keep track of what was going on.

One tweeted: "Can anyone actually follow #LiarITV ?!" and, in the same boat, another posted: "I don’t know if I’m coming or going watching #liar."

Blaming the near three year gap between series, another disgruntled viewer reacted: "I need a recap of #LiarITV because I've literally forgot everything that happened," and another commented: "Me trying to remember all the characters and what they did in the first series. It's been too long a break."

Another tweeted: "I’m so confused, who are these new characters? All the old actors look so different," but plenty of other people who watched Liar are loving all the twist and turns already, with one writing: "How good is #Liar and so clever @ITV how this episode is linking back to the last series," and another enthusing: "Liars return was incredible! I have waited years for this and it has not disappointed! Once again my favourite thing on tv! Hooked!"

One thing that looks pretty certain about series 2 is that it will be Liar's last. Appearing on Monday's This Morning, Joanne told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "This is the finale, the finale is the finale. There will be no more Liar. It’s official."
