Liar fans struggle to follow dramatic thriller as it returns years after first series

Liar fans were left gripped when series one wrapped with an epic cliffhanger over two-years ago.

And despite ITV viewers eagerly awaiting the second series, many were left puzzled and confused when the thriller returned on Monday night.

The first series of the drama ended with serial rapist Andrew Earlham's (Ioan Gruffudd) body laying lifeless in a marsh and series two is set to uncover who murdered the surgeon - and there are a number of suspects in the frame.

However, fans were finding themselves more confused than engaged with the first episode as they struggled to follow the mind-boggling flashbacks and to recall all the threads of the plot that were aired over two-years ago.

A number of viewers took to social media to vent their frustration about being lost during the return of the whodunnit.

One person tuning in penned on Twitter : "No clue about this first episode #Liar."

Others said of the numerous flashbacks: "Suppose we'd better get used to flashbacks" and "Flashbacks galore already in this, so confusing... #Liar."

Some struggled to connect the dots after the hiatus.

"Watching #LiarITV but i really can not remember what happened last season" and "Don't know why I'm watching #LiarITV I can't remember what happened in series 1" mused somes watchers.

Others agreed: "This is even more confusing than the last series #LiarITV" and "Wish I'd rewatched series one of #liar before tonight's episode. Forgotten who everyone is!"

Liar began in 2017, pulling in an average 6.7 million viewers, with teacher Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) going on a date with Andrew.

The thriller began in 2017 and viewers waited for two-years for it to return to ITV (ITV)

But the next day Laura feared she had been raped, which devastated Andrew denied.

Viewers were left wondering who was lying and in a final twist it was revealed Andrew had attacked other women and filmed it.
