Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead - review

I have lost count of the number of times I have read this gripping book. This is one of those rare books that reminds you what an unputdownable, interesting novel should be. When I turned the last page over, I was telling everyone I know to read this book and they are all (I’m sure) grateful that I did!

When Georges moves into his new apartment block, he meets Safer, twelve year old, self appointed spy. Soon, he has become Safer’s apprentice and their mission is to track the mysterious Mr.X who lives upstairs. What is a game and what is a lie? How do you know whether something is pretend or real?

This is not just a great, modern day spy mystery but it also has a deeper meaning that makes you want to cry and not put the book down. In short, the ending is breathtaking. It is heartbreakingly sad and amazingly happy all at the same time. It has a certain warmth that makes it a truly poignant read.
