Last month, LiAngelo Ball revealed three teams showed interest in signing him for the NBA’s Summer League in Las Vegas. On Sunday’s episode of “Ball In the Family,” the middle Ball brother gave his father, LaVar Ball, the list of teams, which included the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat.
Here’s the full interaction between LiAngelo and LaVar:
LaVar: “So what you got going on for the summer? What they talk to you about? Did you talk to those guys?”
LiAngelo: “They said three teams is: Brooklyn Nets, OKC and the Miami Heat.”
LaVar: “Okay, they all need shooters.”
LiAngelo: “Yeah, for workouts and stuff. For summer league, they got one in Las Vegas.”
While it’s true that the Thunder, Nets and Heat all could have used shooters, it’s hard to imagine LiAngelo was at the top of any of their summer league wishlists.
To put things into perspective, the least productive player for the Thunder at the Las Vegas Summer League was Devin Cannady, a 6’2″, 23-year-old point guard who averaged 18.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his senior season with Princeton. Meanwhile, LiAngelo hasn’t played a game of organized basketball in over a year and when he did, it was in his father’s league, the Junior Basketball Association. So far, no one that played in the JBA has received a call up from an NBA team.
It’s possible that LiAngelo would have performed well if given the opportunity, but due to an ankle injury that kept him out of summer league, we won’t know for a little while longer.
