Liam Treadwell dead: Grand National winning jockey passes away, aged 34

Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell has died at the age of 34.

Treadwell won National Hunt racing’s most famous race in 2009 on board 100-1 shot Mon Mome, the biggest priced winner of the Aintree showpiece in more than 50 years.

He suffered a serious head injury in a fall at Bangor in 2016 and initially retired from the sport two years later but returned to racing and rode 10 winners over jumps last season.

His most recent race was at Hereford in March, with jumps racing yet to return from the coronavirus shutdown.

Trainer Alistair Ralph, for whom Treadwell had been working, told the Racing Post: "Liam was a great person, a great friend. It's a terrible shame. He'd been with me for a season as my assistant trainer and still rode. We had a great season together.

"It's very sad. I have never met anybody who had a bad word to say about him."

Grade 1-winning trainer Olly Murphy paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “Terrible hearing the shocking news about Liam Treadwell. A kind, warm hearted man who I enjoyed having round Warren chase for the short spell he spent with us. May his mind now be at peace. Sleep well x”
