Liam Smith to return in Mexico later this month

Liam Smith will be back in the ring later this month.

The 31-year-old super-welterweight was last in action in March when he stopped Sam Eggington inside five rounds at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.

Smith claimed the vacant WBC Silver title against the Stourbridge man and is planning another assault on the world stage having previously held the WBO crown which he lost to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez back in September 2016.

And ahead of a big fight in the 154-pound division, ‘Beefy’ has had his next fight confirmed.

He will join Jono Carroll, the Dublin super-featherweight, in boxing on August 24 in Mexico.

The fight, at the Centro de Usos Multiples, will come as part of the supporting cast to Juan Francisco Estrada’s WBC super=flyweight title defence against Dewayne Beamon in Hermosillo, Sonora.

Smith’s win against Eggington came after his defeat at the hands of another Mexican, Jaime Munguia, in America last July.

Filip Hrgovic, the Croatian heavyweight who is undefeated in eight contests since turning professional, will feature on the card when he defends his WBC International title against Mario Heredia, while there is also set to be action for Diego Pacheco, Alexis Espino and the talented Brooklyn-based Uzbek Shakhram Giyasov.
