Liam Smith misses crucial penalty for Sunday league side hours after knocking out Chris Eubank Jr

Only 12 hours after a knockout win over Chris Eubank Jr, Liverpool boxer Liam Smith was back playing for his Sunday football team.

Smith delivered an emphatic performance at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday night. 'Beefy' produced the performance of his career to sensationally knock out Chris Eubank Jr.

But that didn't stop the big Liverpool FC fan from swapping his boxing gloves for football boots the following morning as he turned out for his team, Custys FC.

It was a big game, too, as Custys took on Pineapple FC in the FA Sunday Cup at Heron Eccles.

But in contrast to the previous evening, it was Smith suffering a knockout blow in a match that centred around two penalties and watched by hundreds of supporters.

Pineapple scored their spot-kick to progress. But, after coming on a as substitute, Smith missed the chance to level the tie after Custys were awarded a penalty of their own late on in the game.

The 34-year-old dragged his right-foot effort wide of the post before holding his head in his hands as his team bowed out of the prestigious competition.

But it was a different story in Manchester in front of 21,000 fans the night before as he raised his hands in glory after a superb display against Eubank Jr. Smith applied the pressure early on before knocking his opponents down twice in the fourth round, lead the referee to waive the fight off.

This isn’t the first time Smith has celebrated a boxing win with some Sunday league football action either. After his victory over Anthony Fowler in 2021, he was spotted playing for Custys a day later, where he did manage to bag himself a goal.
