Scots schoolboy, 12, named one of the UK's best young drivers

A Scots schoolboy has been named one of the best young drivers in the country. Liam Shields, 12, of Cumbernauld, came joint third in his age category in the Young Driver Challenge held at Birmingham’s NEC last weekend.

Drivers aged from 10 to 16 were judged on a range of driving skills, including reversing, parking, manoeuvring a slalom, handling junctions and independent driving.

And motoring TV stars Vicki Butler-Henderson and Quentin Wilson watched over the competition, run by Young Driver, the UK’s largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons, before handing out prizes.

After his success in the 10-13 age category, Liam said: “It’s been a fantastic experience. I was really pleased to have made the final from hundreds of entries and I’m really proud of how I performed on the day.”

Vicki Butler-Henderson added: “It was fantastic to see how well the young drivers handled the car and it was an honour to award all of them with their prizes.

“Hopefully, all these youngsters having the opportunity to learn at an early age will create a safer next generation of drivers for our roads, which is a huge benefit to us all.”
