Liam Rosenior admits key error in Chelsea rout: 'That's on me'

Hands up: Liam Rosenior - (Ben Whitley/PA Wire)

Liam Rosenior admitted he “needs to be better” after Chelsea lost 5-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain to face a likely Champions League last-16 exit.

The Blues were all but eliminated from the Champions League in the last 16 as a damaging 5-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes left them with a mountain to climb in next week’s home second leg.

Two goals in the final 16 minutes took Chelsea from level at 2-2 to the brink of exiting the competition.

“A very disappointing result,” he said afterwards. “Initially I was really, really happy with our performance. The last 15, 20 minutes were crazy in many aspects. That's on me.

“I need to be better in moments, setbacks, mistakes happen. But you have to stay calm in the moment, me included.

“And we didn't, and we were punished by a very good team, which makes the scoreline a painful one because for 75 minutes, we were in the tie and the game itself.”

Asked what he specifically needs to do better, the Englishman explained where he can have a greater impact as the Blues’ head coach.

“I need us to maintain our calm in the moment when we have setbacks,” he explained. “This is on me. It's not a blame of the team. It's something that we've spoken about from my first day coming in, about reacting positively, about staying calm in depression moments and it's not happened.

“That's why it's on me. That's not pointing the finger of blame at the players. The intensity of our press, some of our football, some of the chances we created was outstanding. If we don't overcome this hurdle, we won't reach our potential and it's my job to find the answer to it.”
