Liam Payne thanks ex-addict Russell Brand for helping him kick alcohol

Liam Payne has revealed ex-addict Russell Brand and his therapist helped him kick a battle with booze.

The former One Direction star spoke about struggling in 2017 as he launched his solo career and became a father.

Talking on ITV’s This Morning , Liam, 26, said: “I had a thing with drink, and it was a guy called Chip Somers who got me sober.

“I was sober for about a year and visited Russell Brand. We went down to meetings together.”

Comedian Russell, 44, was a patron of the Focus 12 treatment centre, founded by Somers, 64, which closed last year because of financial issues.

Somers now sees clients at his London clinic.

Liam said: “As Strip That Down came out I was almost as afraid of success as I was failure, which isn’t a comfortable place to be in life because you’re not really sure what you’re doing.

“For anybody who’s having a problem with mental health, the best thing to do is speak to someone. We’re all as crazy as the next person.”

Before finding fame, Liam, who only has one kidney, abstained from drinking alcohol citing health risks.

He told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “I was at a point where I was too young to stop [drinking] and it turned my social life upside down.

“It was very lonely. Many things in my life went up, but many things went down at the same time. It was about pressing that reset button and realising you could cope without it.”

Liam split from Cheryl Tweedy, the mother of son Bear, in July 2018 and is dating US model Maya Henry, 19.

Strip That Down is the biggest solo single from a One Direction member.

  • Liam’s festive single All I Want (For Christmas) is out now.
