Liam Payne says One Direction reunion will be 'sooner rather than later'

Talks have started for a One Direction reunion – and two of the bandmates promise it will be “sooner rather than later”.

The group went on hiatus six years ago and fans were disappointed they did not reunite for their 10th anniversary in 2020.

Liam Payne said he spoke to Louis Tomlinson to discuss the idea. Liam performed on the same bill as reunited band The Wanted for Tom Parker’s charity concert on Monday night.

He said: “I spoke to Louis about it and we were saying it has to be sooner rather than later.”

Zayn Malik quit the group in March 2015, and the remaining four members gave their last performance that December.

All have recorded solo material, with Harry Styles winning Brit Awards and a Grammy and Niall Horan’s second album out last year.

Simon Cowell, who formed the group on The X Factor, said this year he thinks the reunion will happen and would be “amazing”.

Liam was at the Royal Albert Hall for Tom Parker’s Inside My Head gig for Stand Up to Cancer. Last October, Tom was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

Speaking about re-forming after seven years, Tom, 32, said: “It’s like putting on an old shoe.”

His bandmate Max George added: “It’s great that so many bands are doing music again – the JLS lads are doing very well.”
