Liam Neeson wants Star Wars reunion with Ewan McGregor despite franchise doubts

Liam Neeson is keen to return as Qui-Gon Jin in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

The Northern Irish actor, 68, portrayed the role of the Jedi Knight back in the 1999 film Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Now in a new interview with Collider, Liam Neeson has questioned the future of the Star Wars franchise in modern cinema.

When asked about fans' desire to see him reprise his role as Qui-Gon in future instalments of the Star Wars franchise, Liam replied: "I'll be honest with you: I haven't heard that at all."

He also seemed surprised when asked if he would like a return by the publication, questioning whether "Star Wars [is] starting to fade away from [the] cinema landscape".

The publication then reports that they asked Neeson whether he would consider making an appearance in the upcoming Disney Plus series centering Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will see his old co-star Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Qui-Gon's apprentice, Obi-Wan.

Liam then is reported to have smiled and responded: "Sure, I'd be up for that, yeah."

In addition to McGregor, actor Hayden Christensen will return to reprise his role as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker from the prequel trilogy of films.

Other confirmed Disney Plus series due to be released from the Star Wars franchise include a spin-off about Rogue One character Cassian Andor ( Diego Luna ) and another about Clone Wars character Ahsoka Tano, who will be played by Rosario Dawson, reprising her role from The Mandalorian.

Another series to be released will be Rangers of the New Republic, which will be set during the same time period as the hit series The Mandalorian, which recently wrapped up its second run.

The Mandalorian is due to return for a third season with star Pedro Pascal in the lead role, but an additional spin-off entitled The Book of Boba Fett will air in December 2021.

This series will focus on the exploits of the iconic bounty hunter from the original Star Wars trilogy, now played by Temuera Morrison.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has yet to have its release date confirmed on Disney+.
