Liam Neeson to return to Irish shores as he begins filming latest project

Liam Neeson is set to return to Irish shores for two months early next as he begins filming on his latest project.

The actor will be taking to Donegal to begin filming The Land of Saints and Sinners in March.

The action adventure movie tells the tale of a retired assassin who is forced to interact with three terrorists after receiving threats.

Locations around the county, such as the fishing port of Killybegs and its surrounding areas, will be front and centre of the huge production.

Neeson won’t be the only Irish actor on the set as well-known Belfast born Ciaran Hinds will also star in the new blockbuster.

The 68-year-old recently starred in RTE’s crime drama Kin as gang lord Eamon Cunningham.

It won’t be the first time the two actors have starred alongside each other as they worked together on several different projects, including John Boorman’s Excalibur.

The Land of Saints and Sinners is to be directed by Robert Lorenz, who previously worked with Neeson on The Marksman.

The producers are also looking for some Donegal natives to join the cast as extras.

Speaking to RTE’s Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show earlier this year, Neeson revealed that he takes any chance he can to return to Ireland.

He opened up about the strange experience of losing his mother in the middle of the pandemic and not being able to attend her funeral in person in Ireland.

He said: "She passed away, she was 94, she had a good innings.

“She passed away last June, which was kinda weird, as in was in the middle of a pandemic, and it was strange for me and my sons in Upstate New York to be watching this funeral ceremony on a screen. Very bizarre.

"I still haven't got my head around it. I think about her every day."
