Liam Lawrence 'agreed terms' at Celtic but claims Neil Lennon snubbed his calls

Former Republic of Ireland star Liam Lawrence has revealed he once verbally agreed terms on a move to Celtic.

The winger held talks with Neil Lennon in 2011 as he prepared to leave Stoke City but claims the Hoops boss went cold on the move and snubbed his calls.

Lawrence then joined Portsmouth on a permanent deal, having spent the previous season on-loan at the club.

He's now opened up on the apparent near miss and admits, as a Celtic fan, he would've loved to play at Parkhead.

Record Sport exclusively told eight years ago how Lawrence said he would walk to Glasgow for a chance to pull on the jersey.

He told talkSPORT: "It was when I was leaving Stoke. I had a conversation with Lennon and things progressed.

"We were away with Ireland at the time in Dublin and he came to the hotel and met me.

"We had a chat in a private room - I don't know if I should be talking about this to be honest!

"We had the chat, sort of agreed terms, if you like and agreed everything.

"But after the meeting it went quiet and I never heard from him again. Things happen in football, it happens.

"He never spoke to me again, we left messages. But that's football, things moved on and I ended up going to Pompey.

"I would have loved to have gone to Celtic, what a club!

"It's an amazing club with fantastic heritage. The trophies they've won over the years, I could've been a part of that."
