Liam Kelly triggers Livingston release clause as he prepares for move to Championship

Liam Kelly has dealt Livingston a blow by triggering a release clause in his contract paving the way for a move to the English Championship.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is midway through a two-year contract but is free to move on for a sum believed to be £50,000.

Kelly, who earned himself a Scotland call-up from Steve Clarke this month, is thought to be heading south of the border after an excellent campaign for the Lions.

Last week, Kelly was linked with former Rangers boss Mark Warburton at QPR although other second tier sides are said to be interested.

A statement on the club website said: “Livingston FC regretfully announce that Liam Kelly has asked for a transfer release clause in his contract to be triggered allowing him to move onto pastures new, with a few teams from the English Championship chasing his signature.”

Kelly has been a key part of the Livingston team which performed beyond expectations this season, keeping 17 clean sheets and earning himself call ups to the Scotland squad.

Livingston boss Gary Holt confirmed that he had tried to hold onto the keeper, but without success.

Holt said: Davie and I have been working extremely hard In trying to keep Liam at Livingston for another year at least.

"Unfortunately it’s not to be and we move on: that’s how football works.

“It now opens the door for last season’s number 2 Ross Stewart to stake his claim for the number 1 jersey for next season’s Premiership campaign.”
