Liam Kearns says Tipperary need to make a breakthrough this summer ahead of Limerick clash

It’s not exactly now or never, but it's getting close to that for the Tipperary footballers.

That's according to their manager Liam Kearns as he tries to plot a path to a potential Munster final against Kerry.

"They need to go and make the breakthrough," said Kearns. "Kerry are only going to get better. As good as they are now, they're young, so they'll only improve.

"Cork will come again, they're too big not to. Once they sort themselves out, give themselves a couple of years and they will come again.

"So if Tipperary are going to do something major, they need to do it soon. But, lets be honest, are they ever going to get to an All-Ireland semi-final again? I don't know. That was a massive achievement."

Limerick will have two players making their first championship starts in this encounter - wing back Colm McSweeney and wing forward Adrian Enright - in a side that includes nine of the line-up that started the qualifier loss to Mayo last summer.

While Patrick Begley hasn't returned to fitness in time, Peter Nash is fit enough to be among the subs.

For Tipp, meanwhile, the game has come too soon for Bill Maher after nine months out and Robbie Kiely after six months travelling the world, while John Keane, Michael Quinlivan, Shane O'Connell and Gavin Whelan are all fit and ready.

"We’re on the back foot since the start of the year, and we’re desperately trying to get on to the front foot," said Kearns. "But these next two games will tell us whether we can salvage something or not".

VERDICT: Tipperary
