Liam Hughes given Liverpool first-team shot as former Celtic goalkeeper earns squad chance a month after Parkhead exit

Former Celtic starlet Liam Hughes has been handed a first-team opportunity at Liverpool just months after leaving Lennoxtown.

The 19-year-old left Glasgow in January without playing a first-team game but has been drafted into the Reds squad against Sheffield United.

This comes just days after making his Liverpool under-23 debut against Arsenal.

The Northern Ireland under-21 has only played one first-team game throughout his career while playing for Portadown in the Irish league.

The teenager has been called on by Jurgen Klopp with both Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher missing.

The Brazilian stopper is missing following the tragic passing of his father, while Kelleher is carrying an injury.

Under 23 goalkeeping coach Mark Morris told the club website when Hughes signed last month: “Liam was basically back in Northern Ireland waiting to go on trial at places and see what he could get.

“The personality we wanted to come in and train is a tricky one; they have to know the reason they’re coming in and not be knocking on our door after two or three months saying, ‘I’m not playing.’

“You’re going to improve because of the calibre of the players you’re training with."

Experienced Adrian was handed the starting spot against the Blades.
