Liam Henderson transfer chase as ex-Celtic star set for Italy stay as he nears Verona exit

Former Celtic and Hibs midfielder Liam Henderson is nearing a switch to Empoli on a permanent deal.

Henderson joined Serie B side on loan in January from Verona and has made an impact with his performances as the club try to return to Italy's top flight.

He became the first Scot to play in Serie A for 33 years earlier this season, since Graeme Souness starred for Sampdoria, when he started in Verona's opening day fixture against Bologna.

But he fell out of the first team picture and moved to Empoli, where he made seven starts and helped them move up from being relegation strugglers to play-off contenders.

And their sporting director Pietro Accardi has revealed his Empoli will activate their option to make the loan move permanent for the 24-year-old, who helped Hibs win the Scottish Cup four years ago.

Henderson also won two trophies with Celtic and two with Rosenborg when he went on loan to the Norwegian club. He's also played for Bari in Serie B.
