Liam Henderson 'to leave Verona' as former Celtic and Hibs star closes in on Serie A exit

Former Hibs and Celtic midfielder Liam Henderson is set to leave Hellas Verona and return to Serie B, according to a report in Italy.

The 23-year-old left Celtic Park in 2018 to sign for Bari, but became a free agent at the end of the season when the club went bankrupt.

He followed manager Fabio Grosso to Verona and last season helped the Butei win promotion to Serie A.

The former Scotland Under-21 international has struggled for game time in the top flight though, making just four appearances after starting the 1-1 draw with Bologna on the opening weekend.

Now Sky Italia's transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting that he'll return to Serie B with Tuscan side Empoli.

The two clubs have been locked in discussions today and have come to an agreement on a loan deal, with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Empoli were relegated to Serie B last season and currently sit 15th in the division, having lost the likes of Ismael Bennacer, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Rade Krunic in the summer.

Henderson's last appearance for Verona came at San Siro as he came off the bench in a 2-1 defeat to Inter .
