Liam Henderson's Serie A debut ends in draw as former Celtic midfielder makes history

Liam Henderson became the first Scot to play in Italian football's top flight since 1986 when he completed 90 minutes for Hellas Verona.

The former Celtic and Hibs midfielder is the first Scot to play in Serie A since Graeme Souness left Sampdoria to become Rangers manager but it wasn't all success for him in his first game.

Verona were held to a 1-1 draw by Bologna but it was viewed as a good result after playing 77 minutes of the match with 10 men.

Henderson also went into the book during the first half as it looked like their return to the top flight was going to be a disaster.

Pawel Dawidowicz was sent off after 13 minutes to allow Nicola Sansone to score from the penalty spot.

Henderson was then shown a yellow card five minutes later but Verona mounted a comeback. Miguel Veloso netted on 38 minutes and the home side then defended for their life.

They had just 23 per cent possession during the game but Bologna couldn't find a way through despite holding the ball for long periods.

It wasn't a perfect start for Henderson, but the talented midfielder will be thrilled to have made his Serie A debut.
