Liam Gordon wants home form turnaround as captain praises vocal Fair City Unity

Liam Gordon is targeting plenty of festive cheer at McDiarmid Park.

The St Johnstone captain has voiced the rallying call for supporters to turn out in force in the lead-up to Christmas.

Action on the home front continues tomorrow against Aberdeen before Ross County (December 22) and Celtic (December 26) arrive in Perth later in the month.

Saints have only one league win at McDiarmid Park in eight games this season — a record the local skipper knows needs to change if a rise up the standings is imminent.

“We need to turn McDiarmid Park back to a fortress and a place where nobody wants to come,” he said yesterday.

“We don’t want the feeling where teams are turning up thinking it will be a good day for them and that we’re not good at home.

“There are loads of things you could probably look at or blame, but it doesn’t really matter.

“We need to focus on getting ourselves right and points on the board. We know it needs to be better and we’re working hard. We don’t want to get known as a club that leaves it late then finishes strong.

“And we don’t want to be chasing our tail all the time but again we’ll roll our sleeves up and fight.”

Gordon praised supporters’ group Fair City Unity for their vocal backing and is calling for the noise to be cranked up even further.

“I love them all and think they are brilliant,” Gordon said. “They make a massive difference at the home games — and even the away games.

“They liven things up a lot. It’s great for me to see that people have that kind of passion for the club.

“They are turning up week in, week out to support us. As a player, it’s brilliant to see the enthusiasm and passion in the stands.

“That can spur us on and help us. They are doing a great job. It’s hard these days — a lot of people maybe find it easy to sit at home and watch football on the television.

“So it’s great to see there is a young generation coming through. I hope it continues and I’m sure it will.”

Gordon continued: “We want as many fans as possible. As players you like atmosphere and you want to play in the big occasions.

“More fans and more noise from our side is going to spur the players on.

“At the European games against Galatasaray and LASK, McDiarmid Park was an absolute cauldron. It was an incredible place with an incredible atmosphere.

“Look, I’m not saying there will be 10,000 week in, week out. But when we have a big support it certainly galvanises the boys.

“If we got a small part of that back it would be great. If you can all come down and support us, that would be greatly appreciated.

“And hopefully we can repay you with some positive results over the Christmas period.”
