Liam Gallagher wades into the NHS pay row

Liam Gallagher didn't hold back when he waded into the NHS pay row on Twitter.

The outspoken Slide Away singer had his say following the news of a proposed 1% pay rise for NHS staff this year.

England's Health Secretary Matt Hancock has defended the decision, describing the country's finances as 'tight.'

Nurses across the country have been left angered by the proposal following their key role in protecting the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

The situation has left some so angered that nurses unions are considering industrial action in protest.

And former Oasis frontman Liam typically didn't mince his words when he said: "Give the NHS and care workers a proper pay rise you w*****s LG x"

One follower was grateful for his support and replied: "Thanks Liam I’m an NHS worker and it’s gutting this 1% that is being offered."

Another said: "Our NHS has been our front line in this battle with covid and we've done what? Clapped? Cracking. That makes it worthwhile."

The Manchester music icon is staging a free concert for NHS workers at The O2 with special guests Primal Scream on Sunday May 23.

When faced with a question from a nurse during yesterday's government press conference, asked how the government could hope to fight the pandemic without the support of nurses, Mr Hancock said: "It's an incredibly important point that we need more nurses - not just the nurses that we have now - and we have a clear manifesto commitment to 50,000 more nurses in the NHS, and I am delighted that there are more than 10,000 more nurses that have joined the NHS over the last 12 months.

"Also we have seen an increase of 34%, so more than a third, in the number of applications to nursing.

"And of course over the past three years nurses have had a 12% pay rise.

"I bow to nobody in my admiration of nurses.

"In fact I learnt that at the knee of my grandmother who was a nurse and worked nights at the Pilgrim Hospital at Boston.

"The challenge is that the nation's finances are tight and whilst everyone else is going to get a pay freeze we are able to propose a pay rise for nurses of 1%.

"I appreciate that that reflects the difficult financial circumstances that the country is in.

"What I would say to every nurse who is watching and everybody that is working so hard is we have over this pandemic pulled together in an incredible way and I hope we can continue to do that to deliver for patients and also to support our NHS and welcome many, many more nurses into the NHS in the years ahead."

The Royal College of Nursing has put together a £35m fund that can be used to compensate nurses if they choose to strike following the low pay offer.

And members of the public are also being urged to take part in a mass 'slow clap' for nurses to protest the pay rise and mock the government's previous clap for NHS workers campaign.
