Liam Gallagher teases possible Etihad Stadium gig next summer

Liam Gallagher has raised the possibility of him playing a huge hometown show at the Etihad Stadium next summer.

The former Oasis frontman was asked directly if it was true he was to play at the home of his beloved Manchester City in 2020.

And he refused to shoot down the suggestion simply saying: "How do you know?"

His response could well have been a sarcastic one.

But Liam, a huge City fan, would no doubt jump at the chance to play at the home of his currently high-flying side.

Oasis played three nights at the ground, then called the City of Manchester Stadium, in 2005 during their tour for their album Don't Believe the Truth. One night was filmed for the rockumentary Lord Don't Slow Me Down.

Liam, whose released his second solo album Why Me? Why Not  last month has previously floated the idea of returning to Knebworth park, the scene of Oasis biggest ever gigs.

A quarter of a million fans attended the two outdoor shows on the sprawling country estate in Hertfordshire in 1996 for which there were over two and a half million applications for tickets.

The shows came just a couple of months after the band played two headline shows at City's then home at Maine Road.

The Etihad hosts a number of gigs each summer with the Spice Girls, Muse and Metallica playing there this summer.

No shows have yet been announced for next year.

Liam is to begin a UK tour next month which includes a show at Manchester Arena on November 20, which sold out in a matter of minutes.

He also played a small, intimate show at the 1,500 capacity Ritz a fortnight ago for Radio X.

Liam, who recently got engaged to fiancee Debbie Gwyther , has previously said he now prefers playing small venues.

However earlier this year he floated the possibility of returning to Knebworth saying: "Any body fancy knebworth nxt summer c’mon you know."

He told Apple's Music Beats station: "I prefer to stay away from the stadiums. And I think, Knebworth, I can do with getting back around there again. I don't know whether it's like but, I think it's definitely doable.

"If you get the right line up, you get all the top bands on there...it's well doable and I think it'd be mega. If not, we'll just do a pub in Knebworth."

Next year will see the 25th anniversary of Oasis' second, and best selling album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
