Liam Gallagher apologises for 'homophobic' tweet about Russian fans

Liam Gallagher has apologised for a “homophobic" tweet about Russian fans branded "ugly and upsetting" by a Coronation Street actor.

The former Oasis frontman responded to violent clashes which broke out during the Euro 2016 football championship.

French police attempted to clear crowds with tear gas in Lille on Wednesday after clashes broke out between English and Russian fans.

Gallagher responded to the violence by writing: “Russian hooligans skintight shorts bumbags batty boy muscles ha ha I'd be more worried bout getting me arse pinched. LG.”

A number branded his use of language particularly insensitive after the Orlando shooting during which 49 people were killed.

“Especially in light of what happened in Orlando a few days ago, that tweet is ugly and upsetting,” Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton replied. “Because homophobia is super amusing, right?” Joe Hurwitz added.

He responded to comments with a brief apology on Thursday morning.

A representative for Gallagher said the tweet was taken out of context.

Oasis split in 2009 after a reported argument between Gallagher and his brother. In December, a judge suggested he could boost his income while not working in music by making “celebrity appearances” on reality television shows.
