Senior Tory MP Liam Fox today warned the Government not to “make promises that cannot be kept” with an election looming within weeks.

The former trade secretary spoke out the day after Chancellor Sajid Javid announced that day-to-day Government spending will increase by £13.8 billion next year — a 4.1 per cent above inflation rise on 2019-20 — with billions more for schools, the NHS and the military.

Writing in The Standard, Mr Fox said that spending increases would depend on the outcome of the Brexit process and the state of world economies.

He added: “The global slowdown currently underway poses one of the biggest threats to our prosperity and we must ensure that we do not make promises that cannot be kept and damage our hard-won reputation as a party for sound economic management.”
