Liam Cooper looking to lay FA Cup demons to rest by putting Crawley Town to the sword

Four years ago, Leeds United took to the field against non-league Sutton United and were beaten 1-0. It was an infamous defeat, one which rankled with the playing squad and manager at the time Garry Monk.

Liam Cooper captained the side that day, but was sent for an early bath ten minutes from time, in what was a torrid end to a horrible afternoon. Since then, he has not started an FA Cup game, nor has he tasted victory in the competition.

Back from injury this weekend, Cooper is likely to be thrown straight into the starting line-up in an attempt for him to regain fitness.

Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Cooper's availability, stating he would be ready from the start in his pre-match press conference which left many suspecting he intends to start his club captain at Crawley.

Much like Leeds United, Cooper does not have a great record in the FA Cup, a competition famed for its championing of the underdog. Cooper has had his fair share of run-ins with lower league sides in his time with Chesterfield, and will know exactly how to deal with Crawley's more rudimentary 4-4-2 approach.

Despite having played ten times in England's oldest cup competition, Cooper has never made it past the Fourth Round, and even has an FA Cup defeat to Crawley on his record.

Cooper's days at Hull City were rather more forgettable than his time at Leeds, but a Fourth Round tie in 2012 saw the Tigers fall to the Red Devils at the KC Stadium.

He is hardly going out onto the pitch this weekend hoping to exact his revenge on Crawley over a result nine years ago, but he will certainly be hoping to put behind him a middling record in the competition.

Four years on from the ignominious defeat to Sutton United, Leeds do still have some players who also featured alongside Cooper that day. Kalvin Phillips and Stuart Dallas started, while Luke Ayling was an unused substitute. Billy Whitehouse - currently of Buxton FC - and Paul McKay, now with Airdrieonians also featured, perhaps explaining why Sutton ran out eventual winners on the day.

Given the amount of time Dallas and Ayling have spent on the pitch this season, and perhaps Bielsa's desire to keep Kalvin Phillips injury-free, Cooper may be the only Sutton survivor who features at the People's Pension Stadium this weekend.

It is a hardly a monumental fixture in the grand scheme of things, but Cooper will at least be hoping to end the game in better fettle than his last FA Cup start versus lesser opposition.
