Liam Cooper holds his hands up to why Leeds United started so badly against Preston North End

Liam Cooper gave his thoughts on Leeds United's performance after they battled back to claim a point against Preston North End.

It was the second time the two sides have played out a 1-1 draw this season, and the second time Marcelo Bielsa's Whites scored late on.

Eddie Nketiah's header levelled things at Deepdale back in November and on this occasion it was Stuart Dallas's long-range effort in a game of two halves at Elland Road.

The Lilywhites pressed effectively and dominated the early stages and could consider themselves unfortunate to go into the break only one goal up, but Bielsa's men came out much-improved in the second half and created a number of chances themselves.

"I think the first 20 minutes they pressed us well," said Cooper.

"We struggled to get out, we couldn’t get it flowing as much as we have been, but we’re always in the game, obviously we conceded a sloppy goal on our behalf. I think that sort of gave us a nudge to get going.

"They’re a good side, we expected that, we weren’t getting it flowing as much as we’re used to.

"We were disappointed, but I think after half-time we got back to ourselves, we played our way out, we created chances and we could have scored a lot more goals today."

Leeds United's club captain struggled in the opening stages as Preston put pressure on the backline and won several physical battles.

After weathering the early Lilywhites pressure, key individuals improved as the game went on and second-half substitute Nketiah made an instant impact, involved in creating a good chance as he linked up well with Helder Costa, before forcing a good save from Declan Rudd.

Gjanni Alioski had a golden opportunity to level things up but blazed over the bar, while a long-range low drive struck the upright.

Cooper was keen to point out the number of opportunities his team created in the second half and feels they did enough to have gone on and won the game.

"I think second half we’ve created some very good chances, hit the woodwork a couple of times," he added.

"I think when you’re behind in any game you just don’t want to get beat, so we’re happy with a point, but I think we should have scored more goals. We shouldn’t concede.

"Disappointed on our behalf, we’ve got to take it on the chin because we’ve got another massive game in a few days."
