Matthew Stafford got an injection in his right elbow this offseason, presumably to help with some discomfort he was having. There are no concerns about his availability for Week 1, but the Rams played it safe with their franchise quarterback this spring by not allowing him to throw during OTAs or minicamp.
Stafford already said he’ll definitely be ready for training camp and will begin throwing to players in informal workouts this summer, but he would’ve loved to get some reps in with Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson and Allen Robinson this spring.
New offensive coordinator Liam Coen is excited to see Stafford throw, too, but he found a silver lining in the quarterback’s limited work.
“It’s been actually pretty cool to see those other guys get some reps, you know, John (Wolford) and Bryce (Perkins),” Coen said. “Obviously, I’m excited to watch Matthew throw the football, but it’s been really good to kind of get to know him a little bit on the side when he isn’t taking those reps. I’ve been able to kind of see things through his lens on the back end and be able to see how he sees things and talk through some concepts. It’s been a great opportunity to be able to see John and Bryce be able to get that work in that was really valuable for those guys to take a ton of reps because in-season, you just don’t get a lot of work in with that first and second unit.”
Coen and Stafford are in their first year of working together, attempting to quickly develop a strong relationship as the season approaches. Coen has been impressed by Stafford’s leadership and knowledge of the game, but he’s looking forward to seeing him throw and really get to work in training camp.
