Liam Cahill appears to have paved the way for his appointment as Waterford manager by stepping down from his role with Tipperary under-20s.
Cahill has been flagged as the frontrunner to succeed Paraic Fanning this week on the back of his impressive track record at underage level with his native county in recent years.
He guided them to an All-Ireland minor hurling title in 2016 and then stepped up to the under-21 job, winning an All-Ireland at that age group last year.
That grade was changed to under-20 this year and Cahill added Munster and All-Ireland titles with wins over Cork in both finals.
He was passed over for the Tipperary senior job last year in favour of Liam Sheedy and having now informed the county board of his intention to quit the under-20 role, the Ballingarry man looks poised to take the reins in Waterford.
In a statement issued by the Tipperary county board, chairman John Devane commented: “Liam Cahill is a man of great honour and commitment and it was a pleasure to witness first-hand his astute attention to detail in delivering success for Tipperary.
“He steps away with a hugely impressive CV at underage level and I have no doubt he will continue to add to it in his managerial career, and I wish him every success in that.
“Tipperary is indebted to Liam, his wife Eimear and family, for his contribution over the past five years.”
