Teenager who collapsed at Liverpool ONE restaurant 'leaves legacy which lives on'

Friends of a 15-year-old who died after collapsing at a Liverpool ONE restaurant led tributes to the teen during a funeral service on Thursday.

Euan McNamara died suddenly after collapsing in Liverpool ONE's Browns restaurant on Saturday, October 22. Members of staff and the public, including off-duty medics, rushed to help the teenager before paramedics arrived at the scene.

He was then rushed to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where he died a short time later. Merseyside Police later confirmed that the death was not believed to be suspicious.

St Mary's College in Crosby, where Euan was a pupil, have issued another touching tribute following the teen's funeral this week. His friends left tributes to him on his coffin and one close friend, Matthew, stood and paid tribute to him at the service.

Ms Kate Gavin, Head of Religious Studies said: "It has been another difficult week at St. Mary’s. Moments of normality interspersed with moments of immense sadness and a sense of apprehension as Euan’s classmates and teachers looked ahead to Thursday. We joined Euan’s family and friends yesterday to say farewell. It was both devastating and inspiring - if that is at all possible.

"What was visible to all of us yesterday was just how important Euan was to so many people. The maroon of St. Mary’s mixed with a myriad of other school uniforms both in the church and back at school afterwards.

"The guard of honour from his Waterloo teammates, SMC 1st XV and cricket team left all of us there in no doubt of the fine sportsman and team player he was. Several times we heard the accolade of him being a tremendous teammate to those he shared a pitch with.

"Whilst the tributes continued, we watched his friends place beloved items on his coffin; a rugby shirt and a Liverpool scarf, and we sat in awe to listen to Euan’s friend Matthew pay tribute to him. It was the bravest thing I have ever seen a young man do - I know I wasn’t alone in thinking this.

"I won’t repeat Matthew’s words but I will say this on behalf of everyone who heard him: Matthew, you were lucky to have Euan as a great mate, but he was incredibly lucky to have you too. We are all immensely proud of you and the dignity and love you showed.

"We are incredibly proud of all of Euan’s friends and how they have conducted themselves over the past few weeks. Their vulnerability, their bravery and their joy when talking about their friend have been very special to witness.

"And so we look ahead, one day at a time. Knowing that there will be good and bad days, but always keeping Euan’s family in our thoughts and prayers. It is fitting that today is Remembrance Day. Euan will be with us at the College every day in every single thing we do.

"His memory will never leave us, we will remember him always. He will be with us in the laughs and jokes we share. He will be with us every time we ask a question in class. He will be with us in the kind words we use to encourage each other. He will be with us whenever we see justice prevail on our corridors.

"He will be with us on the rugby pitch and in the spring wearing cricket whites. He will be with us in the cheeky grins of our pupils. And in time, as his classmates leave us to go and make their own mark on the world, he will still be with them.

"Euan embodied everything it is to be a pupil of St. Mary’s, we are so proud of him. He lives on with us all at the college and his legacy remains here always."
