LFC fans send best wishes to Gary McAllister after alleged attack

Liverpool fans have rallied around former Reds player Gary McAllister after he was allegedly assaulted hours after LFC Legends played in a charity game at Anfield.

The former midfielder was rushed to hospital after reportedly being punched outside a Leeds city centre bar, the ECHO  understands.

Mr McAllister was on a night out when the alleged attack took place.

After news of the incident emerged, LFC fans have sent well wishes to the former player.

Barry short wrote on the ECHO Facebook page:"Speedy recovery Gary , great footballer"

Fans praised the former player as a "nice bloke" and blasted his attack as "disgusting".

One wrote:"Absolute disgusting, this lad payed his respects at my uncles funeral the great Tommy Lawrence which I thought was a wonderful gesture, nice bloke too. Shameful this is, hope you’re ok Gary x"

Police confirmed they were investigating an attack on a man in his 50s in the city centre, but were unable to confirm whether Mr McAllister was involved.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle  , of Leeds District CID, said: “We are investigating an assault that occurred in Call Lane in Leeds city centre at about 4am yesterday.

“The initial report was that a man, aged in his fifties, was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

“We are currently arranging to speak to the victim to take fuller details of the incident and will be progressing the investigation to identify the person responsible.”

Mr McAllister has worked alongside Steven Gerrard as the assistant manager at Rangers since the former Liverpool captain was appointed in 2018.

Gary McAllister played for  Liverpool  under Gérard Houllier from 2000-2002, playing in the team that won the treble in the 2000-01 season and was instrumental in his side clinching the UEFA Cup that year.
