Although still billed as a concept, the LC Convertible seems virtually ready to take on the BMW 8 Series counterpart.

Why not just launch it?
When Lexus showed the current LC in concept form seven years ago, it was only in 2017 that a market-ready version appeared in showrooms.
At the Detroit motor show next week, the Japanese luxury car maker will premiere another show car in the guise of the LC Convertible.
Despite its concept status, practically all exterior and interior details are shared with the current LC coupe. Probably the only items that may be toned down are the 22-inch wheels, although they look great on the eyes.
Like in the past, Lexus is gauging demand for the open-top LC. However, the gestation period may not be as long as the coupe’s with pundits pointing to a 2020 sales release.

What kind of roof does it use?
Lexus hasn’t mentioned whether the LC Convertible uses a soft-top or retractable tin-roof. But look closely at these official pictures and note the creases on the boot cover.
Along with that, the metal version can provide the LC Convertible with the required refinement levels buyers can come to expect of a Lexus. The last model to feature this roof, despite its complex and heavy mechanism, was the IS C in 2007.
Lexus isn’t discussing engine options either, although the coupe sibling is currently being offered with 360hp 3.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid (LC500h) and 467hp 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 (LC500), both with a 10-speed auto.
The LC500, for one, is being offered in Thailand from 17 million baht.

That Bee-em seems more attractive…
The BMW 8 Series Coupe was recently launched in M850i form at 13 million baht. A convertible featuring a soft-top roof will follow this year asking for slightly more in price.
With a similarly sized body, 2+2 cabin and front-engine format, the 8 Series Convertible is the most direct rival for this particular Lexus.
In theory, the LC500 Convertible should still be around four million baht dearer than its M850i rival, which has 530hp of V8 turbocharged poke to additionally boast about.
That said, you’d need to be a true fan for how Lexus’ pending flagship looks like on the skin.
