Lexii Alijai's cause of death confirmed as accidental fentanyl and booze overdose

Lexii Alijai died after ingesting alcohol and the deadly opioid fentanyl, a coroner has confirmed nearly a month after the young rapper's death.

Lexii, real name Alexis Alijai Lynch, died on New Year's Day aged just 21, hours after warning her pals to "stay safe" during their new year's celebrations.

Officials at Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office have been conducting tests and a post-mortem in the wake of Lexii's death.

They have ruled that she died in a hotel room in Minneapolis on the first day of the year. The time of death was 10.36am.

"This individual died due to mixed fentanyl and ethanol toxicity and manner of death is accident," the office confirmed.

"The Minneapolis Police Department is the investigating agency."

Lexii's death comes amid a growing opioid crisis in the United States, which has taken the lives of thousands.

Mac Miller, who died in 2018, was found to have a combination of fentanyl, booze and cocaine in his system when he died at the age of 26, while rapper Lil Peep also necked fentanyl and Xanax shortly before his death in 2017.

The American singer-songwriter Tom Petty accidentally overdosed on the same painkiller in 2016, while Demi Lovato's near-fatal overdose in July 2018 was likely to have been caused by freebasing Oxycodone laced with fentanyl.

Meanwhile, Lexii's good friend and singing collaborator Kehlani has been lending her support to a benefit concert, which will be staged in her hometown of St Paul on February 19.

"This benefit concert is dedicated to making some of her biggest dreams come true. supporting her family, and supporting her city," Kehlani wrote on Instagram.

"To continue the legacy she had begun to build in her city, we have joined forces with the Central Foundation (501(c)3) and Heiruspecs Scholarship to create a recording arts scholarship that will be awarded to promising young artists in the area that strive for continued artistic growth and success beyond high school and show a desire to contribute to their communities."

She added: "We’re proud of all the hope and inspiration you provided to all of us during your time here and we’re going to do our absolute best to honor your work further forever."
