Maine Governor confirms Lewiston shooting suspect found dead

Thousands of Lewiston residents gathered on Sunday night for a vigil honouring the victims killed in the Maine mass shooting.

Residents told The Independent that they were coming together “to show these people that we love them and that they’re not alone” after a shelter-in-place order was lifted and the suspected gunman, Robert Card, was found dead.

“We gathered together this evening because there is love still in this place,” Rev Sarah Gillespie of Androscoggin Home Health Hospice told those assembled. “A love that cannot be gunned down. A love that cannot be affected.”

In total, 18 people were murdered and 13 others were injured in the mass shooting that took place at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston on Wednesday night.

A multiple-day manhunt was launched to find the gunman who was found deceased at a recycling plant on Friday night

Now, questions are mounting as to whether opportunities were missed to prevent the shooting.

CNN reported that the Maine National Guard had asked local police in September to check on the US Army reservist amid concerns that he would “snap and commit a mass shooting”.
