Lewisham house fire: Three dead including two children after blaze ‘started deliberately from inside’

Two more people have died following a “deliberate” flat fire in south London which killed a five-year-old boy last week.

A 14-year-old boy and a 34-year-old woman have died in hospital since Saturday’s blaze, which Metropolitan Police said was started from the inside.

The teenager died on Wednesday and the woman on Thursday following the fire at a block of flats on Russett Way, Lewisham.

All three victims were members of the same family, police said. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the fire.

Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, from the Met, said in a statement: “This was a truly awful incident and we are doing everything we can to support the family’s next of kin.

“We have been working alongside specialist investigators to establish the cause of the fire and it saddens me to say that we believe it was started deliberately, inside the address, by one of those inside.

“While I accept we may never know the circumstances, I am still very keen to hear from anybody who has information that could shed any light of this tragic incident.”

Police were first called to the flat by the London Fire Brigade shortly before 6am on Saturday 6 March.

Anyone with information about the blaze should call police on on 0208 345 3985, referencing Operation Tampere, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
