Lewis pays tribute to Captain Tom Moore by completing his own century in Newmains

A determined Newmains lad has been lapping up local support in memory of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Lewis McDowall, 11, had been learning about Captain Tom at school and his teacher had challenged the class to do something 100 times in honour of him.

The Newmains Primary school pupil took it upon himself to run around his local park in Newmains 100 times, a total distance of nearly 45 miles, and raise money for two groups close to his heart.

Lewis’s mum, Nicola Hainnan, said: “He has been out every day running laps of the park and was determined to finish it by the end of February.

“He has always been quite healthy and is currently training to try and get into Braidhurst High for football.

“He does his five laps with relative ease every day, and has been really enjoying it.”

Young Lewis has chosen to raise money football team Milton Rovers and his street dance school, Mida Moveit.

And so far, he has raised £285 for both groups through donations from family and friends.

Nicola added: “He wanted to raise the money for these two groups as he understood that lockdown has meant they are struggling now. Family and friends have been great and have been very supportive of him through his challenge.

“So many people came on Friday to cheer him on and he completed his final laps.”
